Maintenance of your NOVELAN heat pump

Heat pumps are true multi-talents: Thanks to advanced technology, they not only serve as environmentally friendly heating, some models can also be used as air conditioners and can cool the inside of the building. In general, heat pumps are considered to be low-maintenance, but it is still recommended to have regular heat pump maintenance done. Maintaining your heat pump ensures the function of components necessary for operation and serves to preserve the value of your heating system.

What you should know as the owner of a heat pump

What is the service life of a heat pump?

A heat pump has a lifespan of 15 - 20 years.
Regular maintenance is essential to the proper operation of your heat pump.
With the rapid advancement of heat pump technology and numerous government subsidies, it may even be worth it to replace a ten-year-old heat pump with a new one.

Maintenance intervals

Why is maintenance necessary?

Owners of a heat pump want to enjoy their system for as long as possible. Regular maintenance ensures that the heat pump runs smoothly. Possible errors are detected in advance and corrected ahead of time. Signs of wear will also be discovered in time and measures will be taken by the specialist.

For most devices, it is recommended to check and clean all components of the heating circuit annually. These are, for example, expansion vessels, filters, dirt traps, circulation pumps and valves. Likewise, the quality of the heating water should be analytically recorded annually by a specialist to ensure that it meets guidelines.

Questions about the maintenance of a heat pump

Who maintains what?

Basically, a separation must be made between the maintenance of the actual heat pump/cooling circuit and the periphery of the system (heating circuit manifold, anodes, ext. expansion vessels, etc.). As a heat pump manufacturer, we only maintain the heat pump. The main focus is on the refrigeration circuit of the heat pump itself, as well as the components installed in the unit. For the indoor units supplied by us, such as Compact Station Dual, Hydraulic Station or Hydraulic Module, as well as combined indoor machines such as LICV, SIC, SICV, WS or WSV units, a functional test of the installed components such as pumps, switching valves, mixers, etc. is carried out during maintenance by us. All safety-relevant components such as expansion vessels, anodes, or safety valves must be checked by the executing specialist tradesman. The maintenance of the periphery of the system (piping, heating circuit manifolds, etc.) and all water-bearing or contacting components as well as the maintenance of VDI 2035 is also the responsibility of the executing specialist tradesman and must also be ordered separately from him. This work is not part of our maintenance.

As an owner, what can I do myself to maintain or check my system?

Check the system pressure of the heating water regularly (at least once before the heating season). In case of any deviations, please always consult your responsible installer and have him fill the system so that the water quality is kept in accordance with VDI 2035. Generally, a section on the subject of maintenance can be found in every operating manual, where further information on the subject can be read.

Maintenance of an air/water heat pump

Throughout the year, make sure that the air intake and exhaust openings are free of leaves, snow, or other foreign objects and are not blocked. See also the operating manuals – "Maintenance on demand". It is also important to ensure unobstructed condensate drainage. We recommend having this checked by appropriate qualified personnel. Please contact your specialist technician for this. See also here, Operating manuals - "Demand-based maintenance".

Maintenance of a brine/water heat pump

Do a regular check of the system pressure on the heat source side. There should be an appropriate pressure gauge in the system for this purpose. If a drop in pressure can be detected, please contact your specialist tradesman or the installer of the heat source system.

Maintenance of a water/water heat pump

In addition to the regular check of the system pressure of the heating system, the heat source (e.g. well system) must also be checked regularly by the installer of the heat source system.

How often does a heat pump need to be maintained?

In order to be able to operate your heat pump system efficiently in the long term, we recommend that you have us carry out annual maintenance on the heat pump itself and that you always have the periphery of the system (heating circuit distributor, anodes, external expansion vessels, etc.) serviced by your specialist technician. Through regular maintenance and the associated plausibility check of the settings on the controller, further optimization potential of the heat pump can be exploited together with the technician carrying out the maintenance. This may allow the unit to operate even more efficiently. A possible failure of individual components and the resulting complete failure of the system can also be prevented. If a different maintenance interval is desired, this can also be implemented by us.

Does it affect the warranty or guarantee if no maintenance is carried out on my heat pump?

As long as all other applicable standards and technical regulations (e.g. VDI 2035 - water quality of the heating system) are observed, it has no effect on the warranty or guarantee claims against us if you do not have any maintenance carried out on your heat pump. However, this statement only refers to warranty/guarantee claims against ait-deutschland. Agreements and contracts between the operator of the system and the installer or developer or other contractual partners of the operator must be observed separately and have their own validity that we can not evaluate.

Who can do a maintenance of the heat pump?

In general, any refrigeration company with the appropriate certification and knowledge can do maintenance on your heat pump. We recommend that you have this done by us, the manufacturer of the heat pump, and that you also always have the periphery of the system (heating circuit manifold, anodes, ext. expansion vessels, etc.) serviced by your specialist tradesman.

What does maintenance of the heat pump cost and how can I order it?

In order to have us maintain your heat pump, please complete the "Maintenance Contract" or the "Request for One-Time Maintenance" and send it by e-mail to [email protected] or pass it on to your responsible specialist tradesman. The prices and further conditions can be found in the "Maintenance contract" or the "Request for one-off maintenance".

What work is carried out on the heat pump during maintenance by us?

You will find an overview of this work in the "Request for one-off maintenance" or the "Maintenance contract" under the item Contract services. The maintenance work we perform on the heat pump itself is carried out in accordance with VDMA 24186/ DIN 31051.
